Tattoos as timeless tales: From skin to soul, GenZ unveils an artistic journey of self-expression

A tattoo signifies perseverance and a comfort with the idea of finality, showcasing a determined nature.

Tattoos and GenZ.Throughout history, tattoos have conveyed social status, tribal affiliations and personal narratives, weaving a rich tapestry of global art and tradition.

Imagine a canvas, but not just any canvas – a living, breathing one, where personal stories, symbols, and emotions converge. This is the world of tattoos, where the inked skin becomes a sacred art form that transcends mere flesh to tell tales of identity and significance.

Sid Thapa, who runs Calcutta Ink Studio, and Krishna Joshi from Skindeep Tattoo Studio talk about their perspectives on this form of art in conversation with indianexpress.com.

“Tattoos can be considered magical because they transform the body into a living canvas, where personal stories, symbols and emotions converge, creating a unique and enchanting form of self-expression—a sacred art etched into flesh. It transcends skin to tell tales of identity and significance,” says Sid.

Sid has been a trailblazer in the tattoo world, having run Calcutta Ink Studio in Golpark, Kolkata, for an impressive 14 years.

A tattoo, beyond its aesthetic appeal, speaks volumes about the person who sports it. It signifies perseverance and a comfort with the idea of finality, showcasing a determined nature.

On why being inked or being a tattoo artist matters to GenZ, Krishna says, “GenZ is taking self-expression to new heights, and tattoos are their speakerphones. It’s beautiful how they’re fearlessly using ink to showcase who they are. It’s like wearing their personalities on their sleeves”.

Krishna works with Skindeep Tattoo Studio, Bengaluru’s largest tattoo studio, home to 10 artists, each with their own unique specialisations ready to transform your creative visions into stunning reality.

As we navigate the intricate world of tattoos, the question arises—what are the beliefs revolving around tattoos?

According to Sid, tattoos, “often intertwined with superstitions” carry beliefs that range from providing protection to attracting luck.

Across diverse cultures, tattoos are perceived as powerful symbols capable of warding off evil or ushering in good fortune, adding a layer of superstition to their already rich significance.

“Tattoos go way beyond mere beliefs; they’re a canvas for individuality. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion about them, and that diversity is what makes this art form so intriguing and has also contributed to its increasing demand. It’s about respect for personal choices,” adds Krishna.

Tattoos, with their intricate designs and deep meanings, have left an indelible mark on the world. They are not merely ink on skin; they are cultural markers, expressions of individual identity and symbols of rebellion or belonging.

Throughout history, tattoos have conveyed social status, tribal affiliations and personal narratives, weaving a rich tapestry of global art and tradition.

We delved more into the minds of GenZ and tattoo enthusiasts.

“Although I am not sure if everyone accepts and understands the point of having a tattoo in a way which is more of self-representation. I have had instances where people have mentioned that they got one because they have found it cool. Personally, this is not my opinion of having tattoos. I like the concept because it allows me to express and share who I am,” says Bedapratim Sarma, a technical writer with Cisco System Inc.

“GenZ looks at tattoos almost as a form of journaling. I have noticed how in my sister’s generation people attached a lot of meaning to their tattoos, GenZ seems to be freeing themselves of this notion. That it has to be heavily influenced by great meaning,” says Anjali Mukherjee, an associate manager with Creative Communications.

Tattoos are like the rock stars of the human saga, rocking out through time and keeping the party alive. Forget about linking them to a specific life event—Gen Z is onto something way cooler. For this generation, world views are like fashion trends, changing faster than you can say “tattoo parlour”.

“For every tattoo artist, this craft is a vital part of life. It’s not just about earning a living; it’s about passion. Personally, tattooing is special because it helps treasure memories into art. Memories are the essence of life for each one of us, be it as a photograph, letter, painting or a tattoo, and tattoos preserve them in a unique and artistic way,” concludes Krishna.

Let those tats fly high and tell the world that you are not just living, you are living loudly, with style and a splash of rebellion. It is not just body art; it is your life’s soundtrack in ink form.
