In this season of concerts and live shows arrives a brand new festival that showcases the country’s vibrant indie culture. “Live! At the Library” is the result of a collaboration between literary and alternative culture magazine Helter Skelter and the design-inspired co-working and events space, Ministry of New. “The team at the Ministry of New had approached me about doing one event in their space, and I suggested that this would be a good opportunity to have a whole series of events. So beginning with the first one, we’ll have a Live! At the Library event every month,” says Arun Kale, Founding Editor, Helter Skelter.

The festival is the logical next move for the magazine which, since its inception in 2012, has developed a reputation for selecting the best of what is happening in the alternative art and cultural space in India, and has, for the last couple of years, been independently hosting workshops and events in the city.

The festival will be launched with an evening of poetry and music on December 23, with performances by Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Gowri Jayakumar, spoken word artiste Anu Elizabeth Roche and journalist and writer Mahithi Pillay. Also part of the programme is an Open Mic session, which will see participation by poets from across the city. “The idea is to encourage conversations around the independent arts scene. We hope to build a whole community of people who would like to see more of what is happening in the alternative cultural scene,” he says.
