Weather Update: As death toll crosses 20, IMD issues ‘red’ & ‘orange’ alerts in Himachal; Delhi on high alert as Yamuna crosses danger mark

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued ‘red’ and ‘orange’ alerts for several districts of Himachal Pradesh for the next 24 hours, and an ‘orange’ alert for most of the districts of Uttarakhand for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Heavy downpour has wreaked havoc in the hill states triggering landslides, blocking roads, and damaging bridges. It has claimed 20 lives over the past 48 hours in Himachal Pradesh, reported ANI.

As per officials, the Yamuna in Delhi has exceeded the evacuation mark of 206 metres, prompting the relocation of people residing in flood-prone and low-lying areas to safer locations. It is expected that the river will rise to 206.65 metres by Tuesday afternoon, before gradually subsiding.

Following the increase in water level, the rail traffic over the old Yamuna bridge in the national capital was temporarily suspended on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Amarnath Yatra was suspended for the fourth consecutive day due to a closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. The Ramban section of the national highway underwent extensive damage, leaving around 15,000 pilgrims stranded in Jammu and at other places.

Red alert in Solan, Shimla Kullu; Orange in Una, Hamirpur

In Himachal’s Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Kullu, Mandi, Kinnaur, and Lahaul, a red alert has been issued for very heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours, as per an IMD scientist. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued in Una, Hamirpur, Kangra, and Chamba. As per IMD officials, a flash flood warning has been issued for Mandi, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti for the next 24 hours, ANI reported.

Northwest India

Meanwhile, the Amarnath Yatra was suspended for the fourth consecutive day due to a closure of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. The Ramban section of the national highway underwent extensive damage, leaving around 15,000 pilgrims stranded in Jammu and at other places.

IMD in its latest forecast at 8 am, predicted light/moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Uttarakhand, eastern Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh during the next five days. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over Delhi today.


East and adjoining Northeast India

According to the weather department, fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Bihar during the next 3-4 days, and isolated heavy rainfall thereafter.

Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected over Odisha during the next five days.

West India

As per the met department, light/moderate widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall very is expected to continue over Goa and Gujarat during the coming five  days.

Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over ghat areas of Maharashtra on July 13-14.

Central India

Light/moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall over central India during the next five days. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected over western Madhya Pradesh on July 11-12.

South India

Light/moderate widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over coastal Karnataka and Kerala during the coming five days; Coastal Andhra Pradesh on July 11.
