Weather today: Heavy rainfall likely over parts of Gujarat, IMD issues orange alert

The weather department has predicted heavy rainfall over Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, east Rajasthan for the next seven days.

More rainfall is expected in Gujarat, as a cyclonic circulation hovers over Gujarat’s Saurashtra. The state has witnessed heavy downpour and flooding in the past week, prompting rescue and relief operations.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast that a fresh low pressure area is likely to form over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal on Thursday. Take a look what’s expected across the country:

The weather department has predicted heavy rainfall over Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, east Rajasthan for the next seven days. Intense rainfall is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, coastal Karnataka till September 7. For Wednesday, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall over Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar islands, parts of West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar.

Orange alert in Gujarat

Heavy rain continued to pound parts of Gujarat on Tuesday and an orange alert, a forecast of heavy to very heavy rain is in place for Banaskantha, Bharuch, Surat, Tapi, Navsari and Valsad districts on Wednesday. An yellow alert is in place for districts including Patan, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada and Dang as well as Surendranagar, Rajkot, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Morbi, Gir Somnath and Botad in Saurashtra and Kutch.

Floodwater recedes in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana

There was a little respite in flood-hit Telangana and Andhra Pradesh as the states did not receive heavy rainfall on Tuesday and flood waters have started receding. Incessant rains in the southern states left 33 people dead (Telangana-16, Andhra Pradesh 17), damaged roads and rail tracks and submerged crops on thousands of acres of land. Meanwhile, both the state governments stepped up relief activities in the flood-hit areas with CMs of the states – N Chandrababu Naidu and Revanth Reddy visiting the areas.
