Tamil Nadu Rains: Chennai, 4 other districts on ‘yellow’ alert for heavy rain; schools shut in parts of state

Tamil Nadu continues to face incessant spells of rain due to the onset of the northeast monsoon. A yellow alert for heavy rainfall is in place in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Ranipet districts. According to the latest weather forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), “Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Ranipet districts.”
Impact: Due to the incessant rain, Dharmapuri collector Satish has declared a holiday for the schools in the district on October 23. The IMD has warned of traffic disruption due to the inclement Tamil Nadu weather. According to a source in the Water Resources Department, Mettur dam in Salem reached its full capacity of 120 cubic feet on Wednesday. The inflow to the dam is 36,484 cusecs per day, while about 35,741 cusecs of water per day is being discharged from the dam at present.
Govt takes stock of rain-hit regions: Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Wednesday inspected the Integrated Command and Control Center at Ripon Buildings, Chennai, and directed officials to act swiftly on public complaints. He also visited many rain-hit areas in the city along with senior Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) officials. Following instructions from Chief Minister M K Stalin, GCC organised 106 kitchens to prepare and serve food to 1.46 lakh people affected by rain in the city. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami visited Thanjavur, among the Cauvery Delta districts where paddy crop was submerged, and also the paddy storage centres, and interacted with the farmers.

The weather office has forecast the likely formation of a fresh low pressure area over southeast and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal on October 24.
An upper air cyclonic circulation extending upto middle tropospheric levels lies over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over southeast and adjoining east central Bay of Bengal on October 24, the India Meteorological Department said.
The system is likely to move west-northwestwards and become more marked during subsequent 24 hours, it said.
