Karnataka on Wednesday demanded immediate resumption of the Open Market Sale scheme-Domestic (OMSS-D) for rice and wheat in states. The Centre had discontinued the scheme on June 13 for all states except North Eastern ones, hilly states, and those facing law and order situations and natural calamities.
According to sources, the demand was raised by Karnataka Food Minister K H Muniyappa at the national conference of Food Ministers of States and Union Territories organised under the Chairmanship of Union Food Minister Piyush Goyal.
Muniyappa urged the Union Food Minister and Food Corporation of India (FCI) to restart the OMSS scheme for rice and wheat in the state immediately.
“As OMSS-D got suddenly discontinued, we had to opt for cash transfer instead of foodgrains for the next couple of months,” Muniyappa is learnt to have told the conference.
Responding to the Karnataka Food Minister’s demand, Goyal is learnt to have said that the Centre discontinued the scheme for states to control inflation.
