The Rajasthan government approved five per cent quota for Gujjars and three other communities along with 14 per cent reservation to Economically Backward Castes in the state.
“In principle, the cabinet decided to accord five per cent reservation to Gujjars and three other communities and 14 per cent reservation to EBCs as per law and the Constitution,” an official spokesman said in Jaipur after the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.
The decision comes close on the heels of Gujjars reviving their agitation for reservation and sitting on a dharna in Jaipur.
Led by Col Kirori Lal Bainsla, they have been holding a sit-in since Sunday, demanding speedy implementation of a bill which is awaiting Governor S K Singh’s nod.
The Gehlot government has given its approval to the quota bill which contains similar proposals as in the bill passed by the Vasundhara Raje government last year which was later sent to Singh.
Bainsla, who is spearheading the Gujjar agitation and is camping in the city since Tuesday, said that the decision to withdraw the agitation will depend on the outcome of the meeting with the Chief Minister scheduled to be held later on Thursday.
The official spokesman said that the quota ball is now in Raj Bhawan’s court and as soon as any action is taken by the Governor, the state government would act accordingly and positively.
Against the backdrop of the agitation,Governor Singh met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday in New Delhi, though it is not clear what transpired between them. The Governor also held meeting with the Gujjar delegation on Wednesday.
