Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Monday spoke with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin to enquire about the situation in Karur after stampede at a TVK rally in Karur killed 40 people, including children, sources said.

Gandhi also called actor-turned-politician Vijay to convey his condolences for his supporters’ deaths in the tragedy.

Acknowledging Gandhi’s call in a post on X, Stalin said: “Thank you, my dear brother Rahul Gandhi, for reaching out to me over phone, conveying your heartfelt concern over the tragic incident in Karur, and sincerely enquiring about the measures taken to save the precious lives of those under treatment,” Stalin said.

They said the chaos began shortly after 7.30 pm behind the van from which Vijay was speaking when dozens of supporters, who had climbed a tree to get a better view, fell onto the tightly packed crowd about 50 meters away. The sudden crash triggered a panic that rippled through the audience, crushing men, women, and children.

Vijay, facing flak from various quarters, announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh each to the families of the victims, while expressing profound grief over the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also declared an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of those who died and ₹50,000 for the injured, while the Tamil Nadu government announced ₹10 lakh for each victim’s family and ₹1 lakh for the injured.

The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee pledged ₹1 crore to the bereaved families, while the BJP promised ₹1 lakh to the kin of each deceased.
