Drug peddler gets 10-yr imprisonment

Fatehgarh Sahib: A local court Saturday sentenced a narcotics smuggler to 10 years of imprisonment. A fine of Rs one lakh was also imposed on Karnail Singh. Singh and Gurinderpal Sharma were arrested and five kg opium recovered from their car during a routine checking near Bhaironpur village on Fatehgarh Sahib-Chandigarh Road on August 4,2010. Sharma was acquitted due to lack of evidence.

Unaccounted cash over Rs 1 cr seized

Rajpura: The police Saturday seized unaccounted cash worth Rs 1.75 crore from three persons during a routine checking at the GT road here. The cash was recovered from a SUV which was intercepted by the police near Baproar village,SP Bhupinder Singh Khatra said. The money was handed over to the income tax department and the I-T officials will question the three persons – Jai Singh,Dharminder,Lebwis — to ascertain the source of the money,he said.

Man,friends duped of Rs 90 lakh

Moga: Dharamkot police Saturday booked four persons for duping Harnek Singh and his friends of Rs 90 lakh by promising to send them to Canada and getting them Canadian citizenship. Om Prakash and his wife Meenakshi have been arrested,two other accused,Vaibhav Sharma,son of Om Prakash and Sohan Lal from Jalandhar,are absconding. “We gave Rs 90 lakh to these four persons and they promised as Canadian citizenship more than 18 months ago. However they neither sent us to Canada nor returned our money,” Till then neither we have been sent to Canada and nor we have got money back,” Harnek Singh said in his complaint. ASI Pritam Singh said raids are on to nab remaining accused.

Badal slams petrol price hike

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has termed the petrol price hike of Re 1.40 per litre as “anti-people” and said the Congress-led UPA government has taken the decision with the sole motive of giving undue benefit to the big oil companies. He said the move was reflective of Centre’s doublespeak as on one hand it claims that the recent budget would arrest the inflationary trends,and on the other it effected a hike in the petrol price.

CM gives hope to teachers

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Saturday assured the teaching and non-teaching associations of sympathetically considering all their legitimate demands and resolve them in a time bound manner. An official spokesperson said Badal held a series of meetings with different associations and assured them that no laxity or delay in the implementation of decisions would be tolerated.
