India launched missile strikes against nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir in the intervening night of May 6 and 7. Codenamed ‘Operation Sindoor’, the retaliatory strikes came two weeks after the April 22 attack, during which terrorists gunned down 26 civilians in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam.

In a press briefing on Wednesday morning, Indian Air Force Wing Commander Vyomika Singh said, “Pakistan has systematically built terror infrastructure. It is a complex web of recruitment and indoctrination centers, training areas for initial and refresher courses and launch pads for handlers. These camps are located both in Pakistan as well as Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir areas.”

Singh added that the selection of targets for Operation Sindoor “was based on credible intelligence inputs and the role of these facilities in perpetrating the terror activities.”

Take a look at the terror camps targeted by the Indian armed forces, and why they were selected.

In Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir

1. Sawai Nala camp – Muzzafarabad

Located 30 km from the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, it was a training centre for Lashkar-e-Taiba. Terrorists behind attacks in Sonmarg (October 20, 2024), Gulmarg (October  24, 2024) and Pahalgam (April 22, 2025) were trained in this camp.

2. Syed Na Bilal camp – Muzzafarabad

It was a staging area for Jaish-e-Mohammad. It also served as a centre for weapons, explosives and jungle-survival training.

3. Gulpur camp – Kotli

It is 30 km away from the LoC and a base of Lashkar-e-Taiba, which was active in Rajouri and Poonch districts. Terrorists involved in the April 20, 2023, attack in Poonch and the June 9, 2024, attack on a bus carrying pilgrims were trained here.
