The temple committee also said they would try to talk to first-time violators and then impose a fine if they do not follow the instructions.

The Balaji Dham temple in Muzaffarnagar has enforced clothing rules for men and women devotees. In a notice issued Tuesday, temple authorities said those wearing short clothes like ‘half pants and mini skirts’ will not be allowed to have a ‘darshan’ of the deity.

The temple committee also said they would try to talk to first-time violators and then impose a fine if they do not follow the instructions.

“All women and men should enter the temple premises in modest clothing. Those in short clothes, bermuda, mini-skirts, torn jeans, socks, leather belts, purses, etc should cooperate by having a glimpse from outside,” read the notice, a copy of which is put up outside and on the temple premises.

“We have observed that some of the women who come for a darshan of the deity in short clothes distract the attention of others. The women’s heads should be covered while performing puja. The temple is a sacred place and we all should preserve the dignity of the place,” said Alok Sharma, head priest at the Balaji temple.

The temple committee has also put up a similar notice on its Facebook page.

“We have received an appreciative response following our decision to maintain decorum in clothing. Those supporting the move outnumber those who are opposing it. The sanctity of the place should be preserved,” said Shankar Tayal, head of the Balaji Dham Mandir Samiti.
