Muskan Rastogi and her boyfriend Sahil Shukla, who were arrested on March 19 for allegedly killing Muskan’s husband Saurabh Rajput, will be presented before the magistrate through video conferencing as their judicial remand ends Tuesday. The Meerut police in Uttar Pradesh have, however, not submitted a remand application seeking their custody.
Muskan allegedly murdered Saurabh, 29, with Sahil’s help on the night of March 3 at their rented apartment in Meerut’s Brahmpuri locality after adding sleeping pills to his dinner.
The accused, both aged 26, were manhandled by lawyers when they were produced before the magistrate on March 19. Apprehending similar backlash again, jail officials and the district administration decided to present them before the magistrate though video conferencing this time, sources said.
Viresh Raj Sharma, Senior Jail Superintendent, Meerut, said their judicial custody is likely to be extended.
Ayush Vikram Singh, Superintendent of Police (SP), Meerut City, said the police have collected sufficient evidence from the crime scene at the rented apartment of the deceased, besides details of the accused, including their activities in Shimla and the hotels they stayed in.
“We have also taken into possession the murder weapon and recorded the statements of witnesses. The preparation of the chargesheet is almost complete. It will be submitted in court next week. We are awaiting forensic reports on the electronic evidence which will be submitted during the course of the trial,” the SP said.
Saurabh Rajput, a former Navy officer who was working as a sales manager at a London mall, married Muskan in 2016. On the night of the murder, Muskan reportedly sent their six-year-old daughter to her mother’s house.
The police investigation has revealed that Muskan first stabbed her semi-conscious husband in the chest but as she could not exert enough pressure to push the knife through his body, Sahil helped her. Once Saurabh was dead, the accused allegedly took his body to the bathroom where Sahil dismembered the body. The police said they initially planned to put the severed parts into a suitcase but since it was not big enough, they used a drum instead, and poured cement into it.
A police officer said, “After the murder, Muskan and Sahil embarked on a tour to Himachal Pradesh, mainly Shimla, in a taxi booked from Meerut on March 4. We have recorded the statement of the cab driver Ajab Singh who was with the two accused during their 14-day tour.”
The police have also recorded the statements of the owner of the shop from where Muskan purchased the drum and the owner of the pharmacy from where she purchased the sleeping pills, the officer added.
“Sleeping pills cannot be sold without a prescription from a certified doctor but Muskan paid money to an unidentified aged person – she claims it was her father – and convinced the person at the pharmacy that he badly needed the pills but she had forgotten to bring the prescription,” he said.
