Meanwhile, jailed BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad arrived at Vidhan Bhavan to cast his vote after court granted him permission. However, the Opposition parties – Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) raised objection against Gaikwad being granted permission to vote. Acting on Congress party’s letter, election officer has sought response from Chief Election Officer of Maharashtra regarding the same and Gaikwad has been asked to not to vote as the reply is awaited.
The elections to the vacant seats is likely to spring surprise amid fears of cross-voting and with both Maha Vikas Agadi and Mahayuti leaders meeting their MLAs yesterday. At least seven Congress MLAs defied the party's directive while voting in Friday's biennial elections to 11 seats of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, results showed.
Congress, which has 37 MLAs, had fixed a quota of 30 first preference votes for its candidate Pradyna Satav, and seven remaining votes were to go to Milind Narvekar, candidate of the ally Shiv Sena (UBT), party sources said.
Eventually, Satav got 25 and Narvekar 22 first preference votes, which meant at least seven Congress MLAs cross-voted.
The ruling Mahayuti alliance of the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP won all the nine seats it contested, while Jayant Patil of the Peasants and Workers' Party (PWP), supported by Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP), lost. (PTI)
"Nothing wrong has happened in MLC polls. Our votes were intact and no one indulged in cross-voting. We are surely not happy with the loss of Jayant Patil. Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday said the BJP has been a party with a difference and that is why it has repeatedly won the trust of voters, but cautioned against the saffron outfit repeating mistakes committed by the Congress in the past which saw its exit from power.
"If we continue doing what the Congress used to do, then there is no use of their exit and our entry," emphasised Gadkari in comments coming more than a month after the BJP failed to notch up a majority on its own in the Lok Sabha polls.
Gadkari was addressing a Goa BJP executive meeting near Panaji which was attended by party's state unit president Sadanand Tanavade and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, among other leaders.
Gadkari stressed that "We (BJP) have to create a corruption-free country and for that we should have a plan in place".
Referring to politics in adjoining Maharashtra, Gadkari argued that in his home state there is a trend of playing politics on caste lines (jativadi rajkaran).
"I have decided not to follow this trend. I have told people that I will not indulge in caste-based politics (jaat-paat). Jo karega jaat ki baat, usko padegi kaske laath (the one who will speak about caste will get a strong kick)," he warned. (PTI)

With the support of Independents, the BJP has a strength of 111 MLAs. It means the party will require four more votes to ensure the victory of all five of its candidates. The Sena led by Shinde has 38 MLAs, including the CM, and claims to have the support of two legislators from the Prahar Janashakti Party and seven Independents, which makes its strength 47. That will be enough to ensure the victory of its two candidates. Ajit Pawar’s NCP has 39 MLAs and claims it has the support of two Independents, meaning it will be five short of the numbers required to win both seats.

Commenting on jailed BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad permitted to cast vote in Maharashtra Legislative Council election, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said, "BJP MLA Ganpat Gaikwad is allowed to come out of the jail and vote. But when NCP MLAs Nawab Malik and Anil Deshmukh were in jail they were not allowed to vote(for MLC polls in 2022). This is what we call the misuse of power."
Each candidate will require 23 votes to elected. Based on the numbers, the Mahayuti alliance says it is confident of winning nine seats while the MVA is expected to win two. Both sides are short of the required numbers to win the 11th seat.
