In more trouble for Kerala MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, who has been suspended by the Congress, another woman has accused him of sexual assault.

The MLA representing Palakkad was booked last Friday in a rape case in which he was also accused of forcing a woman to terminate her pregnancy. Facing non-bailable charges, Mamkootathil has been absconding since then, and police have intensified their search for him.

On Tuesday, another woman sent a complaint to the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) leadership and the police that she was sexually assaulted by him in 2023.

It was in August this year that multiple allegations of misconduct emerged against the young leader, following which the Congress suspended him from party membership.

The fresh allegation on Tuesday came a day before a court in Thiruvananthapuram is slated to consider Mamkootathil’s pre-arrest bail application.

KPCC president Sunny Joseph told the media that he had received a complaint in his mail on Tuesday afternoon. “The complainant has said in the mail that the matter has been brought to the notice of police. When I got the mail, I forwarded it to the state police chief. This has been communicated to the woman that Mamkootathil has been suspended from the party,” he said.

As per the complaint, a 23-year-old woman said she befriended Mamkootathil through social media, and that while she was in Bengaluru, Rahul took her to a homestay away from the city to discuss marriage.

In her complaint, the woman alleged that Mamkootathil assaulted her despite her resistance. The incident took place in 2023, the complaint said.

“That violent attack shattered me, and I realised that my body bore several cuts and injuries from his brutal attack. When I asked him to reaffirm his commitment to marriage, he coldly stated that he has no intention of marrying anyone and that his political career would never allow him to give due attention to his wife,” the complainant said.

The Congress acted swiftly on the complaint as the party, which is already facing the heat from the Mamkootathil scandal, is keen to put the issue behind it ahead of the Kerala local body elections coming up on December 9 and 11.
