Uttarakhand HC rejects plea of 64 expelled IIT-Roorkee students

The Uttarakhand High Court on Wednesday rejected the petition of 64 students challenging the decision of IIT-Roorkee to expel them for scoring less than five Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA) in semester examinations.

Rejecting the petition, Justice Alok Singh, however, directed IIT-Roorkee to reconsider its decision to expel two students who had a CGPA of more than five but did not have the required credits.

Out of 72 expelled students, 64 moved the high court challenging the decision of the institute, Vipul Sharma, counsel for the IIT-Roorkee said.

While dismissing the petitions of the students, the court held that as mandated by the IIT, students need to have a CGPA of above five and a minimum credit of 22 points.

However, it directed the institute to reconsider its decision on the students who have scored more than five CGPA in semester examinations.

IIT-Roorkee Deputy Director Prof Vinod Kumar said, “We have heard that the court order is in our favour but will wait for the copy of the judgment.”
