Favouring replication of Delhi Metro model in other cities,DMRC chief E Sreedharan today said they went for elevated model on most corridors because the underground section was costly and “five times” more prone to security risks like terror attacks.

Addressing the Urban Mobility India conference here,Sreedharan said implementing the Delhi Metro model successfully in other cities would usher in an era of hassle-free urban transportation.

The 79-year-old iconic ‘Metro Man’ said underground Metro rail will have five times more security risks when compared to an elevated metro and pointed out that Delhi has been facing terror threats recently, according to a press release from the organisers.

Delhi Metro currently has a network of 185 kms and majority of the corridors are elevated.

He also said elevated corridor was ‘cost-effective and financially viable.

Noting that Kolkata Metro was not a pleasant experience,Sreedharan said the success of Delhi Metro has raised hope for introduction of metro train services in other cities such as Bangalore,Chennai,Mumbai,Jaipur and Hyderabad.

“We must replicate the Delhi model in all these cities. It is high time that the country embrace metro rail revolution for a smoother and efficient mobility,” he said.
