Four state-owned steel giants have signed agreements to cumulatively provide Rs 2 crore for setting up a school of privately run Amity Group in Union steel minister Beni Prasad Verma’s Gonda constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
The four PSUs — SAIL, NMDC, RINL and MOIL — have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Amity Group for providing Rs 2 crore assistance for the school, a ministry source said. “They have been asked to contribute for the school, which would be set up in Gonda. The foundation stone laying ceremony is likely in next few days,” the source said.
Verma, who also attended MoU signing ceremony here, could not be reached. Heads of the PSUs, when contacted, declined comments due to “sensitivity” involved in the issue.
The Standing Committee on Coal and Steel, in a report tabled in May last in Lok Sabha, had noted “the haphazard manner in which CSR activities have been carried out by steel PSUs in two districts of UP Barabanki and Gonda.”
The Committee had said that it failed to understand the logic behind concentrating their CSR activities in Gonda and Barabanki “as if headquarters of these PSUs have been shifted to these two districts”.
Verma has won from Gonda five consecutive times and was born in Barabanki.
