A man, who had gone missing from his village in Uttar Pradesh four years ago, was reunited with his family recently, all thanks to mobile messenger application WhatsApp, an NGO said Sunday.

Rajendra Gajera Singh, who in his 40s and is a resident of Bakshi Chhapra village in UP’s Ballia district, had decided to leave home one morning, apparently after being denied recruitment in the army, sources said. His family did not lodge a missing person complaint.

Singh was the found in Bhuj city in Gujarat four years ago by a worker of NGO Shri Loksewa Sarvjanik Trust. The worker took him to the trust premises from where he was admitted to a mental hospital.

The NGO then tried to  get in touch with the police in UP and Bihar to find out if any missing complaint was lodged there. Not meeting with success, the NGO tried to elicit more information from Singh about his native place and family, trust’s secretary Hemendra Jansari said Sunday. “After getting some inputs from Singh, we decided to use WhatsApp to reunite him with his family,” he said.

“We forwarded Singh’s picture and a message to a group on WhatsApp, active in Ballia district, which had 5,000 followers,” he said. Last month, a local journalist, after seeing the message on WhatsApp, contacted the NGO saying Singh was his schoolmate.

Soon after, Singh’s wife Kiran spoke to Rajendra over phone to ascertain his identity. After being convinced, Kiran and Singh’s brother reached Bhuj on May 29 and met Rajendra.
