The Union Home Ministry has sanctioned Z-category security for Ramdev, who campaigned for BJP during the Lok Sabha polls. The yoga guru already has Z-category security provided him to by the Uttarakhand government, but the decision to grant him central security cover was taken after the Intelligence Bureau submitted a report citing a threat to his life outside his home state.
The Home Ministry has also drawn up a list of people who were provided VIP security during the UPA rule, but would be stripped of the security status now. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is yet to clear the names of people to be granted central security cover, will take a final call once he is back from campaigning in Jharkhand.
Those likely to lose their security cover are Congress leaders Jitin Prasad, Sachin Pilot, Rita Bahuguna Joshi and former union minister Beni Prasad Verma. During Sushil Kumar Shinde’s tenure as Home Minister, more than 100 people were accorded cover by central security forces.
Ramdev would be secured by a team of 20-22 CRPF personnel when he is travelling across the country. In the Capital, an equal number of Delhi Police personnel would take care of his security.
A senior ministry official said, “The list of people whose security would be stripped is still tentative. The only certainty is that nobody else would be given any security by the elite NSG commandos.”
