J-K to lay thrust on private fish rearing policy

Laying focus on the promotion of pisciculture,the Jammu and Kashmir government has set up as many as 832 fish ponds in private sector.

Winding up the discussion in the Assembly on the grants of his department,state Minister for Fisheries,Haj and Aquaf,Ajaz Ahmad Khan said,”promotion of pisciculture in private sector is policy thrust of the Government”.

As many as 832 fish ponds have been set up in private sector with the department providing technical know-how and attractive incentives to entrepreneurs in the field,he said adding of these 712 are carp fish units and 120 trout fish.

Setting up of ponds in private sector serves twin objectives of employment generation and making available of quality nutrition item for the consumers,he said adding the fish production in these units is rising consistently.

The Minister said seed production in departmental hatcheries has risen 50 lakh during current fiscal so far as against 40 lakh in 2009-10.

He said the department has a target of producing 70 lakh fish seeds in next fiscal. Four hatcheries have been set up during ongoing financial year while as several more will come up next year,he said.

Khan said two marketing facility centres one each in Srinagar and Jammu will also come in the State. He said 11060 fishermen are registered with the department in the state who,he said are given Rs 50,000 per family loan assistance for construction of their dwelling units in a phased manners.

The Minister said Government has also embarked on promotion of fisheries tourism in the State in various potential areas including Uri,Kishan Ganga Gurez,Leh,Kargil and Kishtwar.
