Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken up at the highest level the issue of a dwindling student outflow from India to Britain because of the latter’s new policies, Parliament was informed on Monday.

In a reference to the issue of stringent visa norms for students, Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani said in Rajya Sabha that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raised the issue during his bilateral meeting with the UK Prime Minister in November at Brisbane, Australia.

“The External Affairs Minister also raised the issue during the delegation-level talks with the UK Foreign Secretary in July,” the reply stated.

“Recently, these issues were also discussed by the HRD Minister with the Minister of Universities, Science and Cities of the UK in the India-UK Education Forum held here on November 13, 2014,” Irani said in a written reply.
