The Haryana Police have arrested two gangsters after an exchange of gunfire in Sonepat and recovered five pistols,a rifle and 24 rounds of ammunition of various bore from their possession.

Pankaj and Praveen, both residents of Sonepat’s Bhainsawal village were arrested late Monday from near a checkpost on Gohana-Sonepat highway.

As the police signalled the duo, travelling in a Maruti Alto car bearing a Delhi registration number,to stop they tried to speed away and opened gunfire at the personnel deployed at the checkpost.

As the police retaliated, the accused abandoned their car but were overpowered when they tried to escape on foot. Later their car was searched and arms and ammunition recovered.

Earlier, the duo had allegedly murdered their village sarpanch Mukesh and an auto rickshaw driver Balraj, owing to old enmity between two rival gangs in the village.

“Both are notorious gangsters and we were looking for them. They belong to a gang of criminals active in Sonepat and neighbouring areas and had attacked members of rival gangs in the past. In 2011,they murdered their village sarpanch and later the same killed an auto rickshaw driver from their village. However,in both the cases the accused were let off by the court,as they entered into a compromise with the victims’ families. The court had acquitted them of murder charges in both the cases about a month ago. We had a secret information that the duo will be travelling with a consignment of arms and ammunition. Based on the information a trap was laid and the accused arrested,” said Balbir Singh,DSP (City),Sonepat.

The accused were produced in a local court Tuesday and have been remanded to police custody.
