Despite strained relations caused by the Sarabjit Singh and Sanaullah Ranjay incidents,India and Pakistan showed some courtesies to their families visiting them in the hospitals.
This week, when family members of Sanaullah the Pakistani prisoner critically injured after being brutally assaulted in a Jammu jail came to Chandigarh, they were given police reporting visas. However, the Indian authorities made sure that officials from the local police station visited them in the hotel and stamped their passports, and they did not have to travel all the way to the police station.
Sanaullahs brother-in-law Mohammed Sehzaad and nephew Mohammed Asif, who arrived in Chandigarh on Tuesday visited him at the hospital on Wednesday for about 10 minutes.
A similar treatment was given to Sarabjits family members when they visited Lahores Jinnah hospital last week where he was in coma and ultimately passed away. They were also given police reporting visas but the Pakistan authorities sent officials to the hospital where their passports were stamped and they were spared a visit to the local police station.
India and Pakistan have this system of police reporting in the visas of each others nationals,in which they are expected to report to the police stations of their destination city. It is exempted for certain categories like politicians, officials and journalists.
