Six workers were injured while undertaking maintenance work at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project Wednesday, sparking another round of rumours about the safety of the plant.
According to site director RS Sundar, a supervisor, two technicians and three contract workers were injured when hot water spilled on them from a pipeline.
“While carrying out maintenance work on a valve in Turbine Building of Unit 1, at 12.10 pm, there was an incident of hot water spillage from the valve in which three departmental personnel and three contractor personnel sustained injuries,” said Sundar.
“Immediately, after giving necessary first aid at KKNPP site like a cold water bath, they were shifted to Anuvijay Township Hospital and subsequently to a speciality hospital at Nagercoil for further treatment,” he added.
Though activists opposing the commissioning of the plant alleged that this is another instance of poor safety record, officials have rejected the rumours, stating that the accident was not connected to the boiler unit.
