Fighting a legal battle against imposition of President’s Rule in Arunachal Pradesh, the Congress has opened informal talks with dissident party MLAs from the state. The political crisis in the state was triggered by a near vertical split in the Congress Legislature Party over the demand for removal of Nabam Tuki as the Chief Minister.
Although the Congress high command had been talking to the dissidents — camping in the national capital for the past five months — it never agreed to meet their key demand of Tuki’s removal and installation of rebel leader Kalikho Pul as the Chief Minister.
Sources said informal contact has been established with Pul. When contacted, Pul told The Indian Express that he was also open to talks with the high command as he is a Congressman. “We were with the Congress and we will be with the Congress. Our fight is against corruption by Tuki,” he said.
Congress general secretary in charge of Arunachal V Narayanasamy on Wednesday signaled the party’s willingness to talk with the dissidents. “On this we have an open mind… we have already said we have an open mind to discuss….,” he said when asked whether the Congress was willing to talk to the dissidents on the differences. Narayanasamy said the “differences” in the state unit could be resolved.
Twenty-one of the Congress’s 47 members had rebelled after their demand for Tuki’s removal was rejected by the high command. The party had alleged that Pul is in talks with the BJP to form a government headed by him. The BJP has 11 members in the 60-member House. Speaker Nabam Rebia has already disqualified 14 of the 21 MLAs, which is yet to be resolved by the court.
Narayanasamy said, “Where is the question of defection in the party? They are all Congressmen, there can be a difference of opinion in the party and it can be resolved within our system… What is the role of the BJP, why should the BJP interfere in that?” He said he had been meeting the dissidents from time to time. “They had certain demands, we also had certain issues that we have been discussing. Why should BJP intervene in that? That is my question. We have got majority and it is our internal matter,” he said.
Congress continued blame the RSS for the crisis in Arunachal Pradesh.
“If we look at the Northeastern states, only RSS-backed and RSS-minded persons have been appointed as Governors — whether it is Nagaland, Tripura, Meghalaya or even Assam. This shows the sinister design of the Narendra Modi government to dislodge constitutionally elected Congress governments in the Northeastern states. They wanted to test and Arunachal Pradesh is the first case,” he said.
