The Supreme Court on Wednesday set a deadline of three months for the CBI to examine crucial witnesses in the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam cases, in which former UP cabinet minister Babu Singh Kushwaha and several other bureaucrats and doctors have been named as accused.
“Incarceration cannot go on for forever. It is unacceptable. We are inclined to direct the prosecution (CBI) that it has three months to examine the witnesses which it considers vital,” said a bench led by Justice T S Thakur.
The bench asked the CBI to produce the key witnesses before trial courts for recording their statements and said that pendency of applications by some accused for alteration of penal charges will not come in the way of trial. It also asked all the accused, including Kushwaha, not to delay the trial court proceedings.
