Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was battling a respiratory infection for two weeks December 24 at AIIMS. He had developed sepsis from the infection, suffered a cardiac arrest around 8 am Thursday, and died of multiple organ failure at 9:10, doctors said.
“There were efforts at resuscitating him for over an hour after the cardiac arrest. But his organs had been failing already,” a senior doctor said. Stable until Wednesday, his condition started deteriorating over the night.

Mufti had compromised immunity, with a history of diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which made him prone to opportunistic, hospital-based infections, doctors said. He was put on oxygen support and treated with antibiotics and anti-fungals.
The team treating him included Dr Rita Sood (prof of medicines), Prof Mohd Ashraf Ganaie (endocrinologist), Dr Tulika Seth (haematology) and Prof P N Dogra (urology).
