WHILE SEPARATISTS in the Valley have been accused of inciting violence, the names of some mainstream politicians are being associated with polarisation attempts in Jammu region, through rumours about the situation in Kashmir.

In one case, police have registered a case against one Ashok Koul for spreading rumours about the death of two Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley. While the FIR does not mention who Koul is, the state BJP on Monday decried the creation of a “fake Facebook account by some unknown persons in the name of Ashok Koul”, its state general secretary.

Alleging that “false rumours are being attributed to the BJP’s state office bearer without any basis”, the party said that “whatever has been posted on Facebook is the handiwork of some persons who want to malign the image of the party and its leader”.

A senior police officer, however, expressed surprise at the BJP’s reaction, saying nothing has been attributed to the party leader in the FIR.

In another incident, Dr Agnishekhar, convenor of Panun Kashmir, an organisation representing migrant Kashmiri Pandits, sent some photographs on a WhatsApp group called ‘Jammu For India’ — of an injured policeman, a Tricolour being burnt, and a cow’s carcass. “In Kashmir, a cow was slaughtered on the Tricolour.

Now Indian leaders will only express grief over it. Brothers, if you have taken the milk of mother cow, then spread these pictures in the entire country and repay the debt of that milk,” he said in his message.

When one person in the group pointed out that these were old pictures, and some were from West Bengal, Agnishekhar remained silent.

When contacted, he told The Indian Express: “The information, as told to me by someone later, was false.”

Another person in the same WhatsApp group claimed that there had been attacks on vehicles carrying Amarnath pilgrims in the Valley.
