The Rajasthan ATS Thursday arrested a marketing manager of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) in Jaipur on charges of “working for the Islamic State”, publicising its ideology online and via social media, and “instigating youth to join IS”.

Thirty-year-old Mohammad Sirajuddin, from M B Nagar in Gulbarga, Karnataka, was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Posted as Marketing Manager (Sales) at the IOC office, Sirajuddin had been living in Jaipur since April 2014.

According to the ATS, he was using Internet groups and forums to instigate Muslim youth to join the IS. The ATS said it had “solid information” on Sirajuddin’s activities which were “confirmed” following an interrogation and data analysis of his online activity.

“You could say he was recruiting people for the IS. He had created several groups on WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook and other social media platforms to publicise IS ideology,” Alok Tripathi, Additional DGP (ATS), told The Indian Express.

“He has confessed he was working for the IS. We are investigating the case further to find out if he had links with anyone else in Rajasthan,” Tripathi said.

Sirajuddin will be presented before a magistrate Friday.

Police seized Sirajuddin’s laptop and several issues of Dabiq, the IS propaganda journal, from his Jawahar Enclave residence in Jawahar Nagar, Jaipur

ATS sources claimed Sirajuddin was an “active member” of the IS who was connected to the terrorist organisation online.

He had been living with his wife and child in Jawahar Nagar since 2014. For the last three months, he had been living alone.

“It’s not that he was planning any terrorist activity. He was arrested for spreading IS ideology among youth using social media,” sources said, adding “he had posted a large number of propaganda videos and messages online with the intention to instigate people to join the IS”.
