FORMER home secretary Anil Baijal has emerged as the front-runner to replace N N Vohra as Jammu and Kashmir Governor. Sources said while the appointment has not been formalised yet, a decision is likely soon.

Baijal was earlier in the executive council of the think-tank Vivekananda International Foundation, several of whose former members have been appointed to senior positions by the Modi government.

Baijal, who is in Paris, declined to confirm to The Sunday Express if he had been approached by the government for the governor’s position. The other names doing the rounds for the job are a BJP leader and Lt Gen (retd) Syed Ata Hasnain, who earlier commanded an Army Corps in J&K.

While the state government has reportedly conveyed its opinion that the new governor not be anybody from the Army or directly linked with the BJP, some BJP leaders are said to be trying for the position.

The issue of change of governor is believed to have been discussed when J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Saturday, and earlier when Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited the Valley on August 25.

Vohra first took over as governor of the state in 2008, amidst heightened tensions over the Amarnath land row, and was given a second term in 2013. Vohra’s work as governor in the state has largely been appreciated.
