The BJP Tuesday underlined there is a “festive atmosphere” across the country after the reforms GST came into effect as “record sales” in several sectors boosted market sentiments during Navratri and Durga Puja celebrations amid an uptick in demand anticipating a slump in prices.

BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra said record sales have been reported from Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra, Tata and other automobile companies, while bikes and small vehicles are also in high demand.

Prices of various items, including electronics goods and medicines for diabetes, blood pressure and cancer drugs have significantly come down, he said.

“Alongside Navratri and Durga Puja, a festive atmosphere has also been created due to the GST reduction. Yesterday, several BJP ministers visited shops, gave roses to shopkeepers, interacted with them, and engaged with customers. The feedback received during this interaction has been tremendous,” he said.

“The Aspirational India, envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, is directly reflected in the car market. Maruti Suzuki has broken its 35-year record for car bookings. Hyundai showrooms have also set a five-year record. On the very first day of the GST rate reduction, Maruti Suzuki delivered 25,000 cars. Maruti’s Senior Executive Officer Partho Banerjee stated this is truly a historic moment,” he said.

Taking potshots at the Congress for accusing the PM of taking credit for the GST rate cuts, Patra said the Opposition is free to credit for it by putting up banners and hoardings “thanking” PM Modi if they feel people are happy with the reforms.

“They also want to take credit (for GST reforms)? They can take it. We did not stop Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Jairam Ramesh or Congress from taking credit… We have released hoardings, banners and their design. They can also put up their boardings-banners, saying, ‘Thank you Modi ji’, and claim credit… It’s not a fight for claiming credit. People are happy. If they also feel that people are happy, they should join them by putting up their own banners and hoardings,” he said.

On the Congress terming the latest GST reforms as “limited, inadequate and too late” and asking the government to address various other issues, Patra alleged the party had levied “17 types of taxes for 75 years” when it was in power and did nothing to “streamline” the system to provide relief to the people during its rule.

“It could not bring ‘one nation, one tax’ (regime). The GST could become a reality only after the BJP came to the helm,” he said. PTI inputs
