As the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a severe cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ today, several areas across Tamil Nadu, including the capital city of Chennai, continued to be pounded with heavy rainfall and gusty winds.
The Tamil Nadu government declared a public holiday in four districts of Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram as rains disrupted normal life.
Given the cyclone. the Chennai International Airport has shut operations till Monday night while the South Central Railways has cancelled at least 144 trains.
Low-lying areas witnessed inundation due to heavy waterlogging as the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel evacuated people stuck in various districts.
Gusty winds led to trees being uprooted and many areas witnessed heavy downpours overnight.
In Chennai, people were seen wading through knee-deep water in areas like Chromepet, Perambur and Tambaram. The Tambaram Government Hospital was also flooded with rainwater early Monday.
Chennai city saw a power outage and internet disruption as torrential rains accompanied by squally winds continued to lash the region.
While rainfall is expected to continue across Tamil Nadu, the cyclone will cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast as a Severe Cyclonic Storm on Tuesday (December 5) with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph.
