The depression over Bay of Bengal crossed coasts of Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh between Puducherry and Nellore on Thursday morning and weakened into a well-marked low pressure area, the India Meteorological Department said. “It (depression) weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area and lay over South coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north coastal Tamil Nadu at 5:30 am today,” the Met Department said in a press release. After torrential rain lashed parts of Tamil Nadu over the past few days, pleasant weather was reported today morning in Chennai. There has been no disruption in traffic movement and public transport services, news agency PTI reported.
Amma canteens open today: While rain ceased in most parts of the state, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that food will be served free of cost in Amma canteens in the city to support poor and ordinary people today. According to RMC, extremely heavy rainfall was witnessed in areas including Cholavaram, Red Hills, Kathivakkam and Manali in Chennai recording 30 cm, 28 cm, 23 and 21 cm respectively.
Relief activities in state: The DMK-led government set up 931 relief centres in the state to ensure that food and medical care are provided for those affected by the floods. Thousands of workers, pumps, relief teams were deployed across the city by Greater Chennai Corporation to tackle emergency situations.

Pleasant weather is reported in Chennai today morning after rains ceased on Wednesday. Traffic movement has returned to normalcy in the city and there has been no disruption in public transport services.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai said the depression over Bay of Bengal is likely to cross north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to north of Chennai on Thursday early morning. Afterwards, it is likely to weaken into a well marked low pressure area by forenoon.
After torrential rain lashed parts of Tamil Nadu over the past few days, heavy rain is likely continue over Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Tirupattur, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Puducherry, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Kallakurichi and Cuddalore today.
