The BJP on Saturday accused Hamid Ansari of making “controversial statements”, and said that the former vice-president is known to show a “Muslim bias”.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said at a hurriedly called press conference that Ansari should apologise.

Patra recalled that despite being V-P for 10 years, Ansari had said he felt insecure being a Muslim.

He recalled the former V-P’s stand on the Jinnah portrait in AMU and Shariat courts in every district of the country. He also mentioned alleged anti-Hindu and anti-India statements by Congress leaders like Shashi Tharoor, Mani Shanker Aiyar and Ghulam Nabi Azad.

The BJP has attacked Ansari earlier too. BJP leader Ram Madhav had questioned Ansari’s absence at the International Yoga Day celebrations in 2015.

While bidding farewell to Ansari in the Rajya Sabha in 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said his thought process was shaped by the time he spent as a diplomat in Muslim countries.
