Currently, 11 Amrit Bharat trains are running across the railways network. Ten of those trains pass through different districts of Bihar; nine trains originate from the state and cover long distances to Delhi, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
A total of nine Vande Bharat trains have been launched in the last five months in the run-up to the elections in Bihar. In all, the 11 Amrit Bharat trains traverse 110 districts and 15 states of the country.
The Amrit Bharat train has non-AC sleeper and general class coaches only. Railways are introducing these trains in areas which see high workers movement and migration throughout the year.
The first two trains were launched in December 2023 between Darbhanga and Anand Vihar terminal and Malda town and Bengaluru. After that the Railways came up with Amrit Bharat 2.0 with some additional features and the first train was launched from Saharsa to Mumbai on April 24, 2025.
“Bihar is the only state of the country which has all three variants of new trains- Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat and Namo Bharat. The reason for the introduction of more Amrit Bharat trains in Bihar is that it has a very high number of workers, who frequently travel to Delhi, Mumbai and south Indian cities in search of jobs. Since, this train has only sleeper and general coaches, more passengers will be accommodated easily and they will not have to travel in the extremely crowded general coaches of other express trains,” said a senior railway official.
