Union home minister Amit Shah who was on a personal visit to the city Wednesday, underwent surgery for lipoma on the back of his neck, under local anaesthesia, as confirmed by the KD hospital administration.
Hospital officials refused to divulge details regarding the procedure and the team of doctors who were involved, citing “quality protocols of the hospital.”
A statement from Dr Adit Desai, Managing director of the hospital located on SG Road, said that he was admitted at 9 am and “successfully operated for lipoma on the back side of his neck under local anaesthesia”. He was immediately discharged, the statement said.
Lipoma that appears as a bulge, in Shah’s case at the backside of his neck, is a form of benign fat tissue tumour, that may cause breathing trouble and sleeping. Risk factors for Lipoma include family history, obesity.
To diagnose lipomas, a physical examination, a biopsy and imaging tests such as ultrasound, MRI or CT scan may be recommended.
