The BJP governments – both at the Centre and in Manipur – are expected to come under criticism from the Opposition at an all-party meeting convened by Union Home Minister Amit Shah Saturday for their handling of the cycle of violence that broke out after ethnic clashes rocked the state some 50 days ago.
The Congress has deputed former Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh to attend the meeting. The main Opposition has already demanded the removal of Chief Minister N Biren Singh and the imposition of President’s Rule. The Congress had been accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of maintaining a silence on the situation in Manipur.
Shah, who had earlier this month visited Manipur and held detailed discussions with all stakeholders, will brief the political leaders on the steps the Centre had taken including setting up the 51-member peace committee and the Commission of Inquiry, headed by former Gauhati High Court chief justice Ajai Lamba, to probe the violence which began on May 3.
A judicial probe panel was among the series of measures announced by Shah at the end of his four-day visit to Manipur in the first week of this month. The commission has been asked to probe the causes and spread of the violence. Sources in the Opposition said they were in touch with each other before the meeting to coordinate their positions.
While the Congress is represented by Ibobi Singh, the TMC has deputed its leader in Rajya Sabha Derek O’ Brien. The others who are attending the meeting include AAP’s Sanjay Singh, Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Priyanka Chaturvedi, DMK’s Tiruchi Siva, RJD’s Manoj Kumar Kha, CPM’s John Brittas, AIADMK’s M Thambidurai and SP’s Ram Gopal Yadav.
Besides Shah, the meeting is being attended by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi. The BJP is represented by its president J P Nadda.
