Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chief Ghulam Nabi Azad was among the many flyers affected by the cancellation of Air India Express flights as a section of the cabin crew called in sick. Slamming the sudden move, Azad said the Tata group airline should be shut.

Around 80 Air India Express flights have been disrupted, including cancellations and long delays, due to the crew shortage since Tuesday night as over 200 cabin crew reported sick.

A visibly upset Azad, who was stuck at Delhi airport after his flight to Srinagar was cancelled, told reporters that “Air India should be shut,” and added that the airline’s “basic culture was bad and nothing would become of it.”

“…I was supposed to leave in the morning. But I am now leaving on an IndiGo flight after sitting here for 3-4 hours…If the flights were cancelled, they should have informed us in the morning itself. Why did they fool everyone?…Air India should be shut…Air India’s basic culture is bad, nothing will become of it…,” he was quoted as saying by ANI.

Operations of the Tata group airline — Air India Express — have been hit as a section of the cabin crew reported sick evidently to protest against the changes in the carrier’s human resources (HR) policies.

The disruptions led to a number of passengers taking to social media to complain about cancellations and long delays.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has sought a report from Air India Express on cancellation of flights and also asked the Tata-group airline to resolve issues promptly. It has further advised the airline to ensure facilities to passengers as per DGCA norms.

Air India Express and AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India) are in the process of being merged and the airline has also stepped up hiring of cabin crew to support its expansion.
