At a time when the INDIA bloc has been hit by multiple hurdles, the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have finally ironed out differences to reach a seat-sharing pact in Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat, Chandigarh and Goa for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi on Saturday, AAP’s Saurabh Bharadwaj, Atishi, Sandeep Pathak and Congress’s Mukul Wasnik, Deepak Babaria, Arvinder Singh Lovely said that the parties had settled for a four-three seat-sharing formula in Delhi, with AAP contesting four seats and Congress three.
AAP will be contesting the South Delhi, New Delhi, West Delhi and Northwest Delhi seats, while the Congress will fight from the East, Northeast Delhi and Chandni Chowk seats.
Currently, all seven seats in the national capital are held by BJP MLAs — each with over 50% of the vote share.
In Haryana, while 9 seats will be contested by the Congress, Kurukshetra has come to AAP’s fold. Meanwhile, in Gujarat, AAP will contest from Bhavnagar and Bharuch.
The Congress will also be contesting from Chandigarh and two seats in Goa.
In Punjab, however, both the parties had already decided to go alone as the state units of both parties stuck to their position of not aligning with the other. In Assam, too, AAP has already announced the names of three candidates.
The announcement comes days after the Congress and Samajwadi Party finalised their seat-sharing deal in Uttar Pradesh. While the Congress is set to contest on 17 seats, the remaining 63 seats will be contested by the Samajwadi Party and other parties willing to be part of the INDIA alliance.
Bengal continues to be a bone of contention for the Opposition bloc as Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress has said that the party will be going solo in the state. The Congress, meanwhile, have tried to downplay the situation by stating that “heated discussions” were on between the two parties to secure a deal.
