Two militants were killed in an overnight gunfight in south Kashmir on Tuesday in south Kashmir’s Kulgam.
Police say they have recovered the bodies of two militants but are yet to ascertain their identity and affiliation.
“Bodies of 02 terrorists killed in the anti-terrorist operation recovered so far. Identity & affiliation being ascertained. Operation in progress. Further details shall follow,” J-K Police posted on X.
The gunfight started on Monday evening when a joint team of forces cordoned off the Redwani neighbourhood of south Kashmir’s Kulgam following specific inputs received about the presence of militants.
As the joint team approached the target area, the militants, who were hiding, opened fire leading to a brief gunfight.
While there was no shooting after the initial exchange of fire, the security forces tightened the cordon in the night to prevent the militants from escaping.
On Tuesday morning, the joint team of forces resumed searches and re-established contact with the militants hiding in Redwani village.
The exchange of fire between the militants and the joint team of forces continued for sometime and culminated with the killing of two militants.
Police said the operation in the area was ongoing and they were ensuring that more militants were not present in the area.
Police said that while the bodies of the slain militants have been recovered, they have not been identified nor their affiliation ascertained yet.
The gunfight in south Kashmir comes two weeks after a gunfight in north Kashmir’s Sopore, where two militants were killed on April 27.
