Schools closed on September 4: Heavy monsoon rains have thrown life out of gear in several parts of India, leading to waterlogging, submerged roads, landslides, and severe flooding. Offices have shifted to remote work in many areas, while schools and colleges have either switched to online mode or declared holidays.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Coastal Karnataka, Gujarat Region, Kerala & Mahe, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Telangana, Uttarakhand, West Bengal & Sikkim, and West Uttar Pradesh in the coming days.

In view of this, several state administrations have issued orders regarding the closure of schools and colleges. Here is a state and city-wise update of what we know so far:

Schools closed in Punjab

The Punjab government has announced that all government, aided, private schools, colleges, universities, and polytechnics will remain closed until September 7, 2025. Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains confirmed the decision on X, citing orders from Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, adding that the move was taken due to worsening flood conditions in the state.

Himachal Pradesh schools shut

In Shimla, educational institutions have been closed since Monday due to continuous rainfall, landslides, and falling trees. The district administration issued a fresh order confirming that all government and private schools, coaching centres, and nursing institutes will remain shut on Wednesday as well.

Teachers and staff have been exempted from attending in person, with online classes continuing instead.

The update came after confusion was caused by a fake notification that circulated widely on social media, forcing the administration to clarify and file a police complaint.

Uttar Pradesh (Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar)

District administrations in Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida) declared a holiday on September 3, 2025 for all schools from Nursery to Class 12 across council, government, aided, CBSE, ICSE, and Madarsa Board institutions. The step was taken considering the safety of students amid heavy rainfall.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether schools will remain closed on September 4. Parents are advised to stay updated through official school notifications.

Delhi-NCR

While no official closure order has been issued yet for Delhi schools, reports suggest that institutions in Delhi-NCR may remain shut on September 4 if heavy rainfall continues.
The Yamuna river in Delhi has crossed the danger mark, with water levels at Old Railway Bridge rising to 206.03 metres, forcing the bridge’s closure to traffic.

Nationwide weather warnings

According to IMD forecasts, several states including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Uttar Pradesh are likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall in the coming days. Many states are expected to issue further school and college closure orders depending on local conditions.
