$50 million to Harvard, Rs 950 million to IIT-B — Ratan Tata’s generous donations to support research

Ratan Naval Tata: Tata was a celebrated philanthropist and has supported several international and Indian institutes in form of donations, endowments, fellowships, scholarships and more.

Ratan Naval Tata Education Qualification: Born in December 1937, Ratan Tata passed away on October 9 following age-related ailments. The Indian industrialist and philanthropist who served as chairman of Tata Group and Tata Sons from 1990 to 2012, and then as interim chairman from October 2016 through February 2017 was known for being a learned man.

Born in Mumbai, Tata studied at the Campion School, Mumbai till class 8, and then shifted to the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai, followed by the Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, and the Riverdale Country School in New York City, from where he graduated in 1955.

Continuing his studies in New York, he got enrolled in Cornell University from where he earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1959.

Donations, endowments to universities

Tata was a known and celebrated philanthropist in India. In 2008, Tata gifted Cornell $50 million, becoming the largest international donor in the university’s history. “We will remember his legacy as one of India’s most influential business leaders and philanthropists and his tremendous support for scholarships, research, and technology innovation at Cornell,” the university paid tribute to Tata on social media.

He also supported University of New South Wales Faculty of Engineering to develop capacitive deionization to provide improved water for challenged areas.

In 2010 ,Tata Group companies and Tata charities donated $50 million for the construction of an executive center at Harvard Business School (HBS), which is devoted to the Harvard Business School’s mid-career executive education programme.

A few years later, in 2014, Tata Group endowed the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay) and formed the Tata Center for Technology and Design (TCTD) to develop design and engineering principles suited to the needs of people and communities with limited resources. The Tata Group gave ₹950 million to IIT Bombay, which was the largest ever donation received in its history.

In the same year, Tata Trusts provided a grant of ₹750 million to the Centre for Neuroscience, Indian Institute of Science to study mechanisms underlying the cause of Alzheimer’s disease and to evolve methods for its early diagnosis and treatment.

Additionally, in 2018, he developed a Tata Hall at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego), which is a state-of-the-art research facility that focuses on biotechnology and houses the Tata Institute for Genetics and Society, which conducts research on genetics and disease control.

The Tata Group has also formed the MIT Tata Center of Technology and Design at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a mission to address the challenges of resource-constrained communities, with an initial focus on India.

Ratan Tata scholarships

The Tata Scholarship at Cornell University

Tata Education and Development Trust, a philanthropic affiliate of Tata Group, endowed a $28 million Tata Scholarship Fund that allows Cornell University to provide financial aid to undergraduate students from India. This is an annual scholarship that recipients receive for the duration of their undergraduate study at Cornell University.

To receive the undergraduate scholarship, a recipient must be: a citizen of India who has attended secondary school in India; offered admission to Cornell as an undergraduate student; eligible for need-based financial aid.

The Tata Scholarship selection process gives preference to qualified students accepted to the following programmes: College of Architecture, Art and Planning; College of Engineering; Applied Economics and Management major in the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business; Majors across colleges in the biological sciences, physical sciences, and other sciences, as well as the social sciences.

Scholarships for Jammu-Kashmir students

In 2019, Tata Trusts launched a scholarship programme for DEd and BEd students of Jammu and Kashmir, and North East to support teaching as a career. The two-year scholarship will help these students to pursue degree and diploma courses in education.

Additionally, Tata Trusts Students Biennale National Award was also launched, with the objective to recognise and support talented student artists to further develop their potential.

Sir Ratan Tata Post-doctoral Fellowship

The Sir Ratan Tata Post-doctoral Fellowship was established in 1997 at the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE) in partnership with the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. This fellowship is for a period of six months during each academic year, based at the LSE India Observatory.

Through this opportunity, the Fellow is expected to finish a research paper of publishable quality during their stay and make a presentation at a seminar arranged by the India Observatory. The selected candidate should have secured all data and any material required for their research prior to their visit to LSE.

To be eligible, applicants should be early career post-doctoral researchers working on social science with a focus on South Asia. Candidates should have been awarded their PhD – the fellowship is not intended for students registered for a degree or diploma, nor is it intended for senior academics. Additionally, applicants should be in permanent employment with an established institution in the SAARC region which includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

J N Tata Endowment

This endowment was established by Jamsetji Nusserwanjee Tata in 1892, and has awarded loan scholarships to more than 5700 Indian students, drawn from all over India. The Endowment supports only higher studies overseas – Master’s, Ph.D., Post – doctoral fellowships, across all education streams, and is awarded on the basis of merit.

To be selected, candidates go through an online test and interviews with subject experts. To be eligible, candidates should be Indians, not older than 45 years as on June 30 of that year, and graduates of a recognised Indian university with at least 60 per cent marks on average in their undergraduate or post-graduate studies. Candidates are not eligible to apply if their undergraduate degree is not from a recognised University in India.

Lady Meherbai D Tata Education Trust

The Lady Meherbai D Tata Education Trust awards scholarships to Indian women graduates of reputed universities who wish to pursue higher education abroad.

To be eligible, applicants should have had a consistent good academic record, and should have applied for admission, or preferably secured admission, to reputed universities or institutions in the United States, UK or Europe. Graduates with at least two years of relevant paid work experience are desired. Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend either an in-person or an online interview with the board of trustees on a designated day.

A gift scholarship towards part of the tuition fee component is awarded to the selected student, approximate value ranges from Rs 3 to 6 lakh, based on the candidate’s performance in the interview.

Candidates who are pursuing part-time, short-term, correspondence courses, exchange programmes, undergraduate courses, distance learning, and those who have yet to receive their final bachelor’s degree marksheets or have already commenced their studies abroad or are proceeding to countries besides those mentioned above, are not eligible to apply.
