NIRF Rankings Research Category 2025: The Ministry of Education, on September 4, has released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, spotlighting India’s leading research institutions. This annual list has placed the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, as the country’s best research institute, followed by IIT Madras, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay. Here is the list of all the top institutions in India as ranked by NIRF in the 10th edition.

In the fifth position in the NIRF 2025 Research Rankings, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, followed by IIT Kanpur, Homi Bhabha National Institute, IIT Roorkee, Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), and IIT Guwahati.
In the 2024 rankings, under the research category, IISc Bengaluru was placed at the top, followed by IIT Madras and IIT Delhi at the second and third places, respectively.
This year’s rankings have been released across 17 categories – overall, SDGs institutes, universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, open universities, skill universities, and state public universities.
The NIRF 2025 engineering rankings highlight the dominance of the IITs, with 9 IITs, including IIT Roorkee, in the list. Southern institutions such as IIT Madras, IIT Hyderabad, and NIT Tiruchirappalli continue to strengthen their presence among India’s best engineering colleges.
The NIRF rankings are determined using weighted parameters that vary by category, but broadly cover teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and peer perception.
