NIRF Ranking 2024 Updates: IIT Madras tops in engineering, overall categories; JNU, DU best institutes

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Amrita University) ranked as the 7th best university in the country for 2024 NIRF rankings. Amrita (ranked 18) is among the only three private universities to find a place in the list of Top 20 universities in the ‘Overall’ category. Ranked 8, Amrita School of Medicine is also in the top 10 medical colleges in the country according to NIRF 2024. Along with that, Amrita School of Pharmacy is ranked 13 in the Pharmacy Education Category while Amrita School of Dentistry ranked 14 in the Dental Education Category. Amrita school of Engineering ranked 23.

In his comments on the university’s consistent performance in NIRF Rankings, Dr P Venkat Rangan, Vice Chancellor, said, “Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and its medical college once again finding a place in the Top 10 in the NIRF Rankings 2024 is ample testimony to the vision of world-renowned humanitarian leader and Chancellor, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi, in setting the dual goals of education for life and compassion-driven research. LPU’s Pharmacy discipline is 16th; Law is 19th; Agriculture and Allied Sectors is ranked 22nd; Architecture and Planning is ranked 24th; Management is 38th; Engineering is 50th; innovation 11 to 50 rank band and in Research Institutions in the top 44 institutions in India.

Among engineering colleges, while IIT Madras has retained its position as the top all through the nine NIRF editions, in the list of research institutions this year, it stands second after IISc.

Said IIT Madras Director Professor V Kamakoti: “Unlike IISc, we are a more teaching oriented institution. IISc is more research oriented. If I want to compete with IISc on the research front, I have to reduce the teaching load of the faculty and that will happen only if I have more faculty. We are now on a very big recruitment spree. We want to recruit more people so that the (faculty-student) ratio is 1:10. We are now somewhere at 1:14.”

IIT Delhi ranked  as the second-best institute in the country in the Engineering category. It is among the top three institutes in the Research category, securing the third position.

IIT Delhi ranks fourth among the country's top five Management institutes. In the overall category, IIT Delhi has featured among the top five institutes, bagging the 4th position.

IITB has been ranked 3rd in Overall category,3rd in Engineering, 10th in Management, 4th in Research & 1st in Innovation category. 

Establishing a record that has not been witnessed in Indian Education History, IIT Madras retained its No. 1 ranking in the ‘Overall’ category for the Sixth Consecutive Year and in ‘Engineering’ Category for the Ninth Consecutive Year, right from the first edition of the Rankings in 2016.  

In the ‘Research Institutions’ category, IIT Madras retained the last year’s position of Rank #2. IIT Madras also retained the #2 rank in ‘Innovations’ category (previously known as Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements), same as the preceding year.

IGNOU makes debut in the new category of 'open universities' this year.

IIT andi has secured the 8th position in the Innovation category of NIRD Rankings 2024. Also, IIT Mandi has improved its rankings to #31 in the Engineering category and #72 in the Overall category this year.

JMI secures 3rd Rank in universities category for third consecutive year. This is for 3rd consecutive time the university has secured a place in top three universities of the country in NIRF rankings

Prof. Mohd. Shakeel, Offg. Vice Chancellor, JMI expressing his delight on the achievement said “We are extremely happy for retaining the 3rd position for the third consecutive year in NIRF. The credit goes to the hard work of teachers and the discipline of our students. Our non-teaching staff who put their sweat and blood into maintaining the standard of the university also deserve this recognition. Our effort was to retain the position and not slip. IIT Guwahati has retained the 7th position in the ‘Engineering’, 9th in the ‘Overall’ and gained 1th0 in the ‘Research’ category in the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) 2024.

This time, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore has topped in the universities category. The second position is obtained by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) New Delhi and the third spot has been secured by Jamia Millia Islamia respectively. Interestingly, the three varsities have continued their dominance from last year and have retained the same spot.

NIRF rankings also carry weight in the professional world as graduating from a top-ranked institution can enhance one's resume and give you extra benefits during job placements. Employers often recognize the value of degrees from highly ranked colleges and may prioritize those candidates who are from high-ranked NIRF institutions during recruitment drives. A good NIRF ranking is a factor that employers consider as a positive indicator of the quality of education you've received, he added.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan at the release of the rankings: "NAAC and NIRF rankings shouldn't be a matter of advertisement. They should be beyond that. Ranking has a material tilt...engineering, medical, pharmaceutical....it is towards something material, something tangible. Knowledge is knowledge. Gyan aseem hain...it is intangible. How to map intangible education, there should be a ranking for this too."

AIIMS New Delhi, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research Chandigarh, CMC Vellore and NIMHANS have retained the top positions.

In the NIRF 2024 pharmacy category, Jamia Hamdard jumps one spot from last year to bag the first position this year. The second spot is obtained by National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research Hyderabad. Birla Institute of Technology & Science -Pilani retains the third position. JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty is placed in the fourth position in the NIRF 2024 pharmacy category.

In the NIRF 2024 Innovation category, IIT Bombay has bagged the top position followed by IIT Madras and IIT Hyderabad in the second and third positions respectively.

Three universities are placed in the debut edition of skill universities category.

Anna University is placed in the top position in the state public universities. It is the new category in the ninth edition.

AIIMS New Delhi is the best medical college in India. It has retained its position.

In 2023, the NLSIU scored 80.52 points, an improvement from 78.00 points in 2022. The second position was secured by National Law University, New Delhi, the same as previous year. The university scored 73.91 points. Nalsar University of Law, Hyderabad secured the third spot with 73.76 points. In 2022, the university was at the fourth position. The number 4 rank is bagged by West Bengal National University of Juridicial Sciences, Kolkata with 69.34 points
