In its ninth edition, three new categories have been introduced — open universities, skill universities and state funded government universities. The AICTE chairperson, Anil Sahasrabudhe, also announced that the Ministry aims to begin ‘sustainability rankings’ from next year.

IITs have grabbed the top positions in the top institutes (overall) and the engineering categories. Meanwhile, IISc Bengaluru, JNU and Jamia are the top varsities in India.
This year, the evaluation criteria have also been modified. The faculty-to-student ratio has been changed from 1:15 to 1:10 in medical institutes, and increased from 1:15 to 1:20 in the state government universities. The ranking framework evaluates institutions on five broad parameters — teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity and perception.
The higher educational institutes are listed under 16 categories — overall, universities, medical, engineering, management, law, architecture and planning, colleges, research institutions, pharmacy, dental, agriculture and allied sectors, state funded government universities, skill universities, open universities and innovation. This year, as many as 10,885 higher education institutions participated this year. Last year, as many as 5,543 higher education institutions participated in the NIRF.
NIRF Rankings 2024 Live: IIT Madras director on institute's success
Establishing a record that has not been witnessed in Indian Education History, IIT Madras retained its No. 1 ranking in the ‘Overall’ category for the Sixth Consecutive Year and in ‘Engineering’ Category for the Ninth Consecutive Year, right from the first edition of the Rankings in 2016.
In the ‘Research Institutions’ category, IIT Madras retained the last year’s position of Rank #2. IIT Madras also retained the #2 rank in ‘Innovations’ category (previously known as Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements), same as the preceding year.
The awards were received by Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, in person, who was accompanied by Prof. R. Sarathi, Dean (Planning), Prof. K. Murali, Dean (Faculty), and Dr. Jane Prasad, Registrar, IIT Madras.

NIRF Rankings 2024 Live: Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham achieves 7th position among India's top universities
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Amrita University) ranked as the 7th best university in the country for 2024 NIRF rankings. Amrita (ranked 18) is among the only three private universities to find a place in the list of Top 20 universities in the ‘Overall’ category. Ranked 8, Amrita School of Medicine is also in the top 10 medical colleges in the country according to NIRF 2024. Along with that, Amrita School of Pharmacy is ranked 13 in the Pharmacy Education Category while Amrita School of Dentistry ranked 14 in the Dental Education Category. Amrita school of Engineering ranked 23.

Among engineering colleges, while IIT Madras has retained its position as the top all through the nine NIRF editions, in the list of research institutions this year, it stands second after IISc.
Said IIT Madras Director Professor V Kamakoti: “Unlike IISc, we are a more teaching oriented institution. IISc is more research oriented. If I want to compete with IISc on the research front, I have to reduce the teaching load of the faculty and that will happen only if I have more faculty. We are now on a very big recruitment spree. We want to recruit more people so that the (faculty-student) ratio is 1:10. We are now somewhere at 1:14.”
