Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) on September 5 held its Convocation for the 2025 graduating batch. The institute conferred degrees to 2,614 students, including 602 women. In its statement, the IIT Roorkee highlighted a 23 per cent female representation in the graduating class. A notable highlight was the sharp increase in the number of women PhD scholars, which rose from 57 in 2023 to 178 in 2025.
The graduating class comprised 1,267 undergraduate students, 847 postgraduates, and 500 doctoral scholars. The doctoral programs, in particular, recorded a steady rise in women’s participation. According to IIT Roorkee, 178 women were awarded PhDs this year, up from 146 in the previous session.

The ceremony was attended by Dr Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Science and Technology, as the Chief Guest, along with other dignitaries. Prof K K Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, presented the annual Convocation Report. According to the report, the institute filed 146 patents during the year, secured Rs 399 crore in research funding, and advanced projects in clean energy, defence, and quantum technology.
Further, IIT Roorkee was also designated as a centre of excellence under the National Critical Mineral Mission.
IIT Roorkee reported advancements in academic reforms, including curriculum updates and the introduction of a flexi-credit system. Start-up activity remained strong with over 180 start-ups valued at more than Rs 4,700 crore. Placements recorded over 1,100 job offers, including 12 international ones. Alumni contributions during the year totalled Rs 31 crore.
Gold medals were awarded to students for academic excellence and overall performance. Vansh Saini received the President’s Gold Medal, while Hardik Sahni received the Director’s Gold Medal. Other students were recognised with institute-level honours.
Coinciding with the convocation, IIT Roorkee also celebrated Teachers’ Day 2025. Distinguished faculty members were honoured with awards for teaching and research contributions, including the Lifetime Teaching Achievement Award and an ‘Outstanding Teacher Award’.
