CUET UG 2025 is set to be one of the most competitive entrance exams. Naturally, a common question among aspirants is, “Are NCERT books enough for CUET?” But the answer isn’t a simple yes or no. You see, NCERT textbooks form the foundation of the Class 12 curriculum and are essential for the preparation of the CUET domain-specific syllabus. But that is only one piece of the puzzle. Read below to learn the answer to your question.
The exam syllabus is available on the official website of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and consists of three sections.
Section 1: Language Paper
Section 2: Domain-Specific Subjects (Subject-wise)
Section 3: General Test
A key thing that a student needs to understand is that CUET UG is not solely a test of academic knowledge. It goes far beyond the NCERT-based domain subjects. The exam also includes sections such as the General Test, which assesses general knowledge, current affairs, quantitative aptitude, and analytical reasoning skills.
To master these areas, you’ll need extra practice beyond NCERT. For example, while NCERT materials might cover basic mathematical principles, the exam demands quick problem-solving skills and the application of concepts to unfamiliar scenarios. Similarly, the language section tests reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar usage that might extend beyond standard textbooks.
To succeed, you’ll need to practice beyond NCERT—from sample papers and previous year question papers to additional reference materials.
Depth of Content: While NCERT books cover fundamental concepts, CUET may include questions that require a deeper understanding or application of these concepts.
Practice Questions: NCERT books may not offer questions that align strictly with the pattern of the exam. Basing your preparation on MCQ, previous year questions might help. Utilizing additional resources like mock tests can enhance familiarity with the exam pattern.
General Test Preparation: The General Test section encompasses areas such as logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude, and current affairs, which are not extensively covered in NCERT textbooks. Dedicated preparation materials focusing on these areas are essential.
Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude: Practice puzzles, logical reasoning questions, and quantitative problems from popular competitive exam preparation books to enhance problem-solving skills.
Current Affairs: Regularly read newspapers, follow reputable news portals, and utilize monthly current affairs magazines to stay updated on national and international events.
Mock Tests and Sample Papers: Engage with mock tests and sample papers available through various educational platforms to simulate exam conditions and identify areas needing improvement.
Another thing to consider is the competitive nature of CUET UG 2025. With lakhs of students aiming for limited seats, every mark counts. Reinforcing your study with extra material helps you tackle tricky questions that may not be covered in textbooks.
Think of it as having a superhero sidekick! Practising mock tests and previous year questions will help to bridge the gap between the theoretical understanding provided by NCERT and the practical application required to tackle the exam’s unique challenges.
Ultimately, NCERT books are an excellent starting point and remain a critical resource in your preparation arsenal. However, relying solely on them might leave gaps. For aspirants aiming for top-ranked institutions, a balanced preparation strategy that includes NCERT textbooks along with additional study materials is key
to success.
