CUET UG 2023: Candidates complaint about far-away exam centres

The UGC Chief says this problem has been spotted in Jharkhand and J&K as the number of registrations increased significantly, resulting in exhaustion of all NTA CUET UG exam centres.

CUET UG 2023: The National Testing Agency (NTA) will soon release the admit cards for the Common University Test (CUET) 2023. The city intimation slip for May 21-28 exams was released recently, and since then some students have been complaining about far-away exam centres.

Several students from Jammu Kashmir are complaining that they have been allotted exam centres in Punjab, even though they opted for closer cities such as Baramulla or Srinagar.

“I cannot afford to go to Punjab to give the CUET UG exam. I had filled out my city preferences as areas close to my home city, but the NTA has given me exam centres in Patiala and Fategarh Sahib. I don’t have the resources to travel that far, and may have to skip the exam because of this,” Aadil Ahmad Malik, an 18-year-old from Kashmir told indianexpress.com.

Misba, another student from Kashmir, has been allotted a centre in Jalandhar, even though she had also applied for Baramulla or Srinagar. “If it would have been any other place of Kashmir, then I would have chosen to appear for the exam, but Jalandhar is far from Srinagar and I am afraid that I would have to miss this opportunity,” she said.

“It’s like the violation of my right to education. We have been given places which can’t be accessed with no further details from NTA,” she added. Students have claimed that they have been trying to reach out to NTA, but have not received any response yet.

While NTA did not respond to indianexpress.com, the UGC explained that this has happened as the number of registrations from J&K and Jharkhand has increased significantly. “There is a huge increase in the number of registered students from J&K and Jharkhand. Since not many centres are available in these two states in spite of our best efforts, after exhausting the centres in their respective states, they are now given in the neighbouring states,” he told indianexpress.com.

Kumar also added that this is the reason the city information slip is announced in advance. The city intimation slips were released today “so that they have time to make travel arrangements. CUET UG 2023 examination dates are also extended to June 1 and 2, as well as June 5 and 6 so that maximum students from J&K and Jharkhand will get their centres in their respective states,” he added.
