Union Minister Sanjeev Balyan shares a special bond with Shoron village in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar — a khap panchayat was held there on Thursday to discuss the ongoing wrestlers’ protest. The village is famous for its ‘sarv khap panchayat’ building, where khap meetings used to take place. Old and in a dilapidated condition, the structure caught the minister’s attention and he ensured funding for its renovation. With renovation work going on, Thursday’s khap meeting took place at a girls’ college in the village.

On A High Note

After presiding over the Central Public Works Department during its most high-profile project in recent history — inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28 — CPWD director-general Shailendra Sharma retired on May 31, after 38 years in the department. In the meantime, the government has appointed CPWD Special D-G (Architecture) Rajesh Kumar Kaushal as D-G on additional charge for three months, or until the post is filled on a regular basis. On Thursday, the CPWD held a farewell for the outgoing D-G and felicitated the new chief. Besides the new Parliament building, the CPWD is currently constructing three new common Central Secretariat buildings, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Vice President’s Enclave as a part of the Central Vista redevelopment.
