The Pune police arrested an ex-serviceman Monday for allegedly stealing gold ornaments from an Army soldier’s house at Balaji Nagar in the Ghorpadi area of the city last month.
The police identified the accused as Sandip Suresh Chavan, 43, a resident of Adarsh Nagar, Dighi. They said a theft of gold ornaments worth Rs 4.26 lakh occurred at the rented house of the soldier, who is currently posted in Chennai, on September 30. His wife lodged the FIR in this case at the Mundhwa police station on October 1.
The complainant said she locked the house on September 26 while going to her relative’s place along with her son and daughter. She said she kept the door lock keys in her son’s shoes on the staircase. When they returned on the afternoon of September 30, the complainant found that the gold ornaments kept inside a box in the bedroom had been stolen.
After receiving information, a team from the Mundhwa police station, led by Assistant Police Inspector Raju Mahanor, launched an investigation into the theft case.
The police checked videos captured by CCTV cameras around the crime scene and other locations. The probe revealed the involvement of the accused Chavan.
The police then investigated his phone call details and other information. It revealed that Chanvan is also a relative of the complainant and had worked with her husband in the Army in the past.
The police booked Chavan under Section 305 (a) [theft] of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police said he committed the theft after knowing that the complainant was not present in the house.
The police suspect that he was aware that the complainant had kept the house keys in the shoes. He allegedly used the keys to open the door.
“We have recovered the stolen gold ornaments from the accused. Further investigation is on,” said Senior Police Inspector Maya Devare of the Mundhwa police station.
