IN A suspected case of suicide, a 61-year-old man died after falling from the third floor of a building in the Pune district court premises at Shivajinagar on Wednesday morning. In a suicide note he has left behind, the man has written about a property dispute case he had been litigating for the past 27 years and has expressed disappointment about his family members and legal system, the police said.
Police have identified the deceased as Namdev Yashwant Jadhav (61), a resident of Wadki area of Hadapsar, on the outskirts of Pune city. An officer from Shivajinagar police station said that a man had come to Pune district court premises for work related to his case. Around 11.45 am, he went to the third floor of the New Building of Pune court premises and died after a fall.
“Initial probe points to this being case of suicide. Our probe suggests that the man did not have a permanent job or a place of residence and had been battling alcoholism. We have contacted his family members,” the officer said.
When contacted, senior inspector Mahesh Bolkotgi, in-charge of the Shivajinagar police station said, “A suspected suicide note has been found in his pocket, which is being investigated.”
Another officer from the police station said, “In the suspected suicide note, he has written about a property dispute he had been litigating for the past 27 years. The note suggests that his father had sold a family-owned property sometime around 1997 without consulting him. At the time he had filed a case against the party to whom the property had been sold. That case has been pending before a court.”
The officer added, “The note also suggests that his family members had promised some property but had not fulfilled the promise. In the note he has expressed disappointment about the family members and the legal system. We will record statements of eyewitnesses if any, those related to the case and his family members. We will also probe the sequence of events leading to the death.”
